These are the stories, told through art, of our times. The world’s population is constantly “on the move” due to persecution, climate disaster, and more. And how we live, adapt, and compassionately support others through these changes is our living history.

I am reminded of, my friend, Jorge Reynardus’ art collection focusing on the Cuban diaspora, witnessing and making art in challenging times in Cuba.

Artists in Purgatory / Cuban artists in the Reynardus Collection

Tankobon Hardcover – January 1, 2017
by Various (Author), Aldo Menendez (Editor)

The book Artists in Purgatory begins with the compelling story of the ascendance in the 1980s of the first generation of Cuban artists to challenge the status quo and defy the mandates of an all-powerful regime. It culminates with the exodus of hundreds of artists from the island. The book consists of nine chapters written by witnesses to the history, as well as by Cuban American experts in the field. It includes hundreds of photographs never before published of the Cuban art scene of the 1980s. It displays eighty fullpage color images of the work of these Cuban artists and includes in-depth interviews with a dozen artists. This 346 page hard cover manuscript comes with a color jacket that fits into a color cardboard box measuring 13½” x 10½” x 1½“. It can best be described as a classic coffee-table book.
