It was 174 years ago today (January 23, 1849) when Elizabeth Blackwell was awarded her M.D. by the Geneva Medical College, becoming the first female doctor in the United States. Blackwell, born in Bristol, England, was accepted at the school in 1847 after getting refused by 16 medical schools. This statue here at Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva honors Blackwell and commemorates her achievement. She played a critical role in both the United States and United Kingdom as a social and moral reformer and is in the National Women’s Hall of Fame in nearby Seneca Falls.
